Richmond Public Library, CA

In 2010 the Richmond Public Library entered the Demco room makeover contest with the hopes of gaining a vibrant new children’s area. To their surprise, they were our big winners! The goal of the Richmond Public Library staff was to “create an inviting parent/child space where parents and children can work side-by-side at computers, share books and enjoy story time.” They wanted an appealing, colorful area that would be more open to draw families into the space. The library was able to raise matching funds to yield a much bigger impact for their children’s area!

Librarians from Richmond Public Library collaborated with Demco designers and staff to create a children’s area that fulfills all the needs of its patrons and staff members. The new children’s room now has space for children and parents alike to read, play and learn alone or with each other. The makeover included new magazine and book displays for popular materials. A local artist was commissioned to paint the whimsical, eye-catching mural in the children’s area as well. A bright and inviting L-shaped configuration made up of Demco’s ColorScape® computer tables and wood shelving greets patrons just inside the entrance to the children’s area. Finished off with a ColorScape circulation desk, Richmond Public Library’s children’s area is now serving its patrons, and librarians, with the furnishings they deserve.
