Iona College, Ryan Library, NY

Designed to inspire learning and contemplation, the Ryan Library now provides much more to students of Iona College than just books.  Originally built in 1949 and completing its most recent renovation in the Fall of 2010, this library was just one of a series of projects Iona College’s campus would undergo as part of a multi-phase process of updating their library buildings. Demco helped design a more user-friendly student experience while preserving the original aesthetics of the library.  Tables with power ports for laptops and integrated wire management for desktop computers provide Ryan Library patrons more ways to stay connected.

A mixture of larger study spaces and smaller reading rooms were furnished with both standard and custom products. The shelving units included custom end panels and custom canopy tops that were designed to accept polished slate inlays. The custom tables included leg panel detailing and glass inlay work surfaces that allowed for integrated task lighting. The existing built-in perimeter shelving and elegant woodwork around the doorways provided the foundation and inspiration for Demco interior services experts to tailor the various furniture elements specifically to this library space. Overall the carefully planned layout yields more intimate spaces within the larger rooms by utilizing the shelving as low-level partitions.
