Brookfield Christian School, WI

From Outdated to Modern

Brookfield Christian School’s principal, Kevin Vos, describes their former library as a “small, dark, cramped space.” Not only did the library lack seating, the book collection and student body had outgrown the dated, utilitarian space, and the circulation desk lacked room for the librarian and volunteers to work.

With “insightful and practical” solutions, said Vos, the Demco interiors team was able to transform the crowded library into a welcoming space where students love to come, not only to find reading materials, but to relax, read and collaborate on projects.

“Demco provided recommendations as to what furniture would fulfill our vision and maximize our space,” said Vos, “And the Demco rep worked with us to perfectly achieve our goals.”

Flexibility Is Key

One design challenge was creating harmony between the new and existing structures in the space. The Demco interiors team provided a solution with natural oak Quest® shelving, which dovetailed nicely with the existing shelving and brought consistent aesthetics throughout the space.

Along with shelving to showcase the collection, the vision for the new school library included a classroom and conference space, separated by glass walls, where students and teachers could collaborate; therefore, flexibility was a must.

The Demco interiors team utilized Kite® Mobile Flip Tables and stackable Smith System® Flavors Chairs to add flexibility. The tables can be reconfigured to accommodate large or small groups, as well as folded, nested and rolled aside to open the space for different activities.

Powerful Learning Opportunities

The library redesign enabled Brookfield Christian School to expand the services it offers its student body. The new layout allows the preschool classes to have storytime in the library, and the older students can now read and work there instead of just check out books.

“The classroom and conference area has already served as the setting for many collaborative discussions and learning opportunities,” said Vos.

The middle school students have taken advantage of the flexible furniture, reconfiguring the seating to work alone or on group projects.

Student and Staff Response

“People are impressed with the library, and it has created a buzz in our school community,” said Vos.

The complementary shelving, Mobile Book Browsing and ColorScape® Reading Benches and Circulation Desk add bright pops of color throughout and offer functional spaces and a cheerful, welcoming environment.

“Students now love coming into the library and can more easily browse and find books, and the librarian and library volunteers have a nice work area where they can better process materials and make sure things are running smoothly,” said Vos.
