University of Wisconsin-Madison Undergoes 2-Phase Service Desk Upgrade in Campus Libraries
Over time, we have discovered that collaborations with our library partners provide the best results and often result in long lasting partnerships. Through this collaboration and a multi-year relationship, Demco’s TechnoLink® Desks create attractive and functional service points at two UW-Madison libraries. The end result is a solution designed for long-term flexibility within the space.
Throughout both phases, Demco interior services experts collaborated with the UW team to make the best use of the space available, developing a plan that achieved all the functional and aesthetic requirements. Together they worked through several design options, utilizing 2D plans and elevation drawings as well as 3D interactive PDF viewer files, allowing UW staff to view the proposed desks from every angle. After multiple on-site meetings with UW staff the resulting solution incorporated mobile storage, custom low level corner elements with removable Corian® tops, various straight and curved elements, and matching wood stains to fit each space beautifully.
Phase One
Long overdue for a facelift, UW-Madison’s College Library (Helen C. White) decided it was time to remodel the entire entry area of the first floor of their library. The staff desks encompassed a large footprint on the first floor and were in need of the most improvement. It was important to create not only a welcoming, professional environment for students and staff but also to create a desk system that was comfortable and functional for users of various heights and ergonomic requirements. In addition, they were looking for a space that would provide numerous self-service points for students and faculty that coordinated with the desk system and allowed for flexibility in the types of activities that take place.
Demco’s customizable TechnoLink desks and tables were a perfect fit for the needs of the UW-Madison library. The line pulls it all together with coordinated reference desks, computer look-up stations, and work tables. Height-adjustable service counters are interspersed with customer convenience spots. An accessible ADA-compliant computer reference table adds to the customer-focused experience with appropriate space for everyone. Work tables and desks with built-in storage cabinets create a functional business center for students and staff.
Phase Two
Satisfied with their new service desk solution, UW-Madison decided to place more TechnoLink desks on 2 other floors of the College Library (Helen C. White) and also in the Wendt Commons Library. Phase 2 of the TechnoLink Desk implementation was part of a broader remodel which came about through a partnership between the Wisconsin Collaboratory for Enhanced Learning (WisCEL) and the libraries. These spaces included the creation of collaborative “inside-out” classrooms as well as computer lab spaces.
Service Desks and auxiliary pieces were designed to fit into defined spaces designated by the UW facilities team. Much of each footprint was determined by structural columns, raised floor, and the ramps which added dimension and separation to the area. Learnings from the first phase and librarian experience with the desking system informed further refinements and enhancements to further meet staff and student needs.
